Tofino and Ucluelet B.C. Salmon fishing Report August 2001Great weather, stunning scenery, diverse recreation opportunities, and fantastic fishing,,,,, August in Tofino B.C.. Not too hard to take. If you are interested in chrome bright, acrobatic Coho Salmon on the cast fly, or searching the deeper waters for long running, tackle busting Chinook. Powerful Halibut of various sizes, along with the plethora of Bottom-fish to provide an interesting mix. August is a prime part of the season in the Tofino/Clayoquot Sound area, with angling opportunities providing a great diversity of species, as well as numerous types of fishable waters. Though the options are numerous, again, this season brings conservation concerns, especially regarding our local West Coast Vancouver Island Chinook. Last seasons “Conservation Corridor” will again be implemented starting August 1st, with some of our outer coastline of islands and reefs, closed to fishing. Check your regulations for details regarding these necessary boundary zones. Ample fishing opportunities are still available. With an allowable retention of two Coho per person, one of which must be a hatchery clipped fish, and two Chinook Salmon per person outside of the corridor area, catch limits are as liberal as one would expect. As this year’s cycle of local Chinook is anticipated to reach the bottom of the scale, fortunately, numerous other mixed stocks will provide some great action. Even more promising, are the phenomenal numbers of Coho Salmon expected to return to most systems along the coast, providing awesome light tackle action for both gear and fly fishermen. This season will be the best yet, for anglers interested in catching large late season Coho on the fly. For any further information on the great opportunities available
