Tofino Fishing Report: 2005
For the Weeks of: April 29th – May 10th 2005
Saltwater Report: Favorable weather conditions
over the past two weeks, has allowed us great opportunities to fish
the offshore waters on a regular basis. Chinook salmon fishing was
quite slow for a week after the last big weather system, along with
large tides that were not very favorable. Good numbers of Chinook
salmon (12-25lbs.) are now providing some great action. Halibut
fishing has been very good, even through the large tide cycle lately.
Many Halibut in the 20-60 lb. range have been caught within 5 miles
of Lennard Island. Portland point has been quite productive for
both Chinook and Halibut by trolling near the bottom.
Saltwater Fly Fishing Report: Sea-Run Cutthroat
Trout and juvenile Coho Salmon have provided some good action in
the shallow bays and estuaries lately. The downstream migration
of Salmon fry into local river estuaries has helped increase feeding
activity for the Sea Run Cutthroat, and the Coho Salmon are starting
to feed more aggressively as well. We are currently offering discounted
half day Charters for these great fly fishing trips.
Freshwater Report: This past two week stretch
has seen many beautiful fly caught Steelhead released unharmed by
Jay’s happy guests, along with numerous Rainbow and Cutthroat
trout in the same river systems. This fishery will stay strong through
early June. The remote lakes of Clayoquot Sound are now very productive,
with the trout actively feeding on many different aquatic insects,
promoting great fly fishing opportunities. See our web site for
some recent photos of beautiful local trout prior to their release.
Highlights of the Week: Jay and guide Blake Klopfenstein
co-hosted repeat guest Chris Matrinez from Seattle, for 2 days of
fantastic Steelhead Fly fishing on a remote Clayoquot river.
Blake also guided guest Jeff Neely from Nashville, Tennessee for
a great day of Halibut fishing. The 65lb. and 70 lb. Halibut will
keep Jeff and his wife trying new halibut recipes, and keep them
dreaming of a return trip to Tofino, as soon as possible.
